7 Things You Must Consider While Buying Functional Bags

Bags are an accessory that can make or break a look. If you are not carrying the right bag with the right dress, your entire look can appear incomplete - just like shoes enhance or detract from your style. We have given advice through skechers on how to choose the right shoes, whether they are heels from a luxury brand or sports shoes from UAE. Today we will be sharing guidelines on things you should consider before purchasing functional bags for casual or formal use.

Purpose of the Bag

Before purchasing a bag, assess the purpose of the bag. Do you need it for casual use? Or do you need it for formal use? And then invest accordingly-similar to how you would purchase a formal dress with specific criteria in mind and a casual dress with different criteria in mind. You should identify the critical factors you require for your needs in a bag. How much do you want to spend and where do you want to buy the bag from often depends on the purpose of your bag.

Budget

When purchasing a functional bag, you need to decide your budget first. If you want a functional bag you need to do your research on typical prices beforehand and then decide whether or not you can afford the bag. Sometimes, in haste we buy inexpensive knockoffs without checking the quality of the bag properly. So, it is important to stop and determine the value proposition of cost vs. quality.

Reviews

When talking about a functional bag you are probably considering purchasing a bag which can last for a longer time. So, before purchasing a functional bag, check the reviews of the brand/store or bag you are considering. Do people talk about durability or longevity of the bag?

Usage

Another important factor to consider when purchasing a bag is to consider how you are going to use it. Or what’s your general usage of a bag? Do you expect to fill it with all your essentials and yet you have a general history of your bags becoming ripped because of overuse or overextension? If yes, then you need to consider the size and quality of the bag as major factors in your purchase.  Paying more may save money in the long run!

Size

Depending on your usage you can assess whether you want to purchase a small bag or you want to purchase a big bag that is storage for things ranging from receipts to make up and sometimes even your clothes. The larger the bag, the more expensive it can be.

Warranty

If you are spending a lot on a bag, then you should consider purchasing a bag with warranty. Expensive branded bags now come with warranties and if you are spending a fortune on a bag then you should purchase a bag with a warranty. Also, you can inquire about the return rate of a given brand to determine if it will last a while.

Material

Last but not the least is material of the bag. The material you are purchasing is going to decide whether your bag is going to be long lasting or not. Thus, choose material wisely and make sure the bag is actually made of the material it says it is made of. When you purchase from a recognized brand this might not be a problem. But if you want to purchase an easily affordable bag you should find out how to assess whether the material is actually what the vendor is telling you what it is. And is that good enough? Is it quality faux leather or vinyl? Or premier fabric such as quality cotton or twill? If you will be using the bag frequently, material matters.

HDS Medallion’s Reactions

Thanks to Rachel for submitting this article.  Generally we agree with Rachel’s 7 things to consider when purchasing a functional bag.  If you are considering investing in a quality bag for a mobility device, some factors become even more important. Here are some additional thoughts on each factor.

Purpose of the Bag

An additional factor relative to purpose is – will this bag work on my device (wheelchairs, walkers, power chairs, scooters, etc.)? We all know that very few “regular” bags work effectively on devices.  HDS Medallion’s bags are designed specifically to work on devices! Each description has a “works best on” section.

Budget

Mobility bags are not “knocked off” yet.  But costs do vary depending on functionality, style and size.  Cheaper bags are usually mono-colored, asexual and made of canvas, duck etc. and are available online.  They range in price from $10 - $35.  HDS Medallion Designer CarryAll Bags are a marriage of fashion and function in 35+ patterns and range in price from $45 - $90.

Usage

Are you going to leave the bag on your device day after day or are you going to change it frequently?  If it is going to be on your device for long periods, be sure and check out the attachment system.  Is it adjustable and detachable?  Are the fasteners plastic or hardware? Ours are adjustable, detachable and have hardware made just for us!

Size

Size affects cost primarily, but on devices may affect functionality also.  If you are in a small wheelchair that is low to the ground, a large bag may not work.  Or if you have to carry large number of items, a large bag may be all that works.

Warranty

Very few mobility bags have huge warranties since they are not luxury goods.  We have a 30 day warranty for general return and a 90 day warranty relative to manufacturer’s defects. A fact that is overlooked is that bags can catch on door jams or lifts, etc. especially if the bag is really full. While not a manufacturer’s defect, we will work with people to help fix any issues that may arise in the first year.

Material

We buy only the highest quality of fabric (cotton, twill, laminated cotton, etc.) in the belief it adds to the longevity of the bag and certainly, it’s eye appeal!  While this makes the bag more expensive, it adds to the value of the bag over time.
