Everyone knows the story of the Grinch who plans to ruin Christmas by stealing all the presents and toys from the Who’s in Whoville, but who would ever think someone would actually steal wheelchairs from a YMCA?
Unfortunately this past week a trailer carrying 13 specialty wheelchairs used by members of the Stoney Point YMCA in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was stolen and though the trailer has been found, the wheelchairs are still missing.
The specially-built wheelchairs are valued at $45,000 so this isn’t a simple case of a few missing basketballs or baseball bats. SportAbility of Iowa provides sports and recreation opportunities for people of all ages with disabilities. The wheelchairs that were stolen are used by the Iowa Chariots and were bought with money raised through fundraisers, and the team holds exhibition games to help raise funds for SportAbility.
SportAbility of Iowa director Jayden Barrett told local news reporters, “It is a shame that at Christmas someone would choose to do this. It doesn’t just affect our group, but all of our efforts to give people opportunities to be active in their lives and their communities.”
Barrett said he is actively watching Craigslist, eBay and local pawn shops in case the chair turn up. The trailer was reported stolen on December 14th and it was discovered empty on Sunday morning, December 15th.

We want to wish all of you who celebrate Christmas a blessed, joyous and fun Christmas.
Merry Christmas from HDS MEDALLION® and the Radys.
